| Windows Server 2008 Hyper-V Resource Kit, by Robert Larson and Janique Carbone with the Windows Virtualization Team at Microsoft Reviewed by Melissa von Tschudi-Sutton, content project editor, Microsoft Press The Windows Server 2008 Hyper-V Resource Kit is a comprehensive technical resource for planning, deploying, and managing virtualization infrastructures based on Windows Server 2008 Hyper-V and Microsoft Hyper-V Server 2008. Virtualization technology continues to evolve, creating the basis for a powerful, flexible, and adaptable computing environment. This gives IT departments more options for quickly responding to changing business needs. Many organizations can draw benefits from implementing Hyper-V technology, including potential cost savings that can result from workload virtualization. Server consolidation, test and development infrastructure, business continuity, and branch office environments in enterprise settings are some of the principal targets of Hyper-V technology solutions. However, small and medium businesses also benefit from workload virtualization. Therefore, the purpose for this book was to provide information and tools that could be useful to a broad spectrum of IT professionals and organizations. Within this Resource Kit, you will find in-depth information and procedures to help you manage all aspects of Windows Server 2008 Hyper-V and Hyper-V Server 2008, including manual and automated installation, security configuration, virtual machine and host-level failover clustering, virtual machine creation and migration processes, monitoring, and backup and recovery techniques. In addition, the authors include guidance to assist you with all aspects of a virtualization project, from the early vision and scope-setting phase through the project pilot phase. In this book, you will find numerous sidebars contributed by members of the Windows Virtualization product team, Microsoft Consulting Services, Microsoft Support Services, Microsoft Sales, and Microsoft Partners that explain Hyper-V design details, feature highlights, and best practices and optimization tips to help you get the most from a Hyper-V deployment. There is also a chapter dedicated to the new features available in Windows Server 2008 R2 Hyper-V and Microsoft Hyper-V Server 2008 R2, including step-by-step procedures to set up and configure the much-anticipated Live Migration feature. Finally, the book's companion CD includes sample scripts and job aids that you can use and customize to help you automate various aspects of managing Hyper-V environments. For Certification
| Reviewed by Ken Jones, Senior Product Manager, Microsoft Learning Web-based development is the most popular of our Microsoft professional developer certification tracks. Which makes the MCTS Self-Paced Training Kit (Exam 70-562): Microsoft .NET Framework 3.5—ASP.NET Application Development (ISBN: 9780735625624) one very eagerly awaited book. Mike Snell is the lead author of the 70-562 Training Kit. As a foundation for his work, he used the MCTS Self-Paced Training Kit (Exam 70-528): Microsoft .NET Framework 2.0 Web-Based Client Development authored by Glenn Johnson and Tony Northrup. With Mike's kind permission, we include below a brief description of the book from his Visual Studio Unleashed blog ( http://www.visualstudiounleashed.com/mikesnell/). And we added one of Mike's Real World sidebar from the book to give you a taste. If you'd like to learn more about the .NET 3.5 certifications and the 70-562 exam, it's worth taking a look at the Microsoft Learning portal site for Visual Studio 2008: http://www.microsoft.com/learning/vstudio/2008. FROM MIKE'S BLOG: I hope [the new 70-562 Training Kit] finds a useful spot in your current library. The book helps developers learn about the many features of ASP.NET 3.5, including Web sites, controls, AJAX, WCF, globalization, and much more. The book is focused on the certification exam. However, those looking to dig into ASP.NET 3.5 should also find it very useful. The Training Kit is focused on developers looking to pass the Microsoft Certified Technical Specialist Exam 70-562 (Microsoft .NET Framework 3.5, ASP.NET Application Development). For those looking to take the exam, the book includes: • The chapters (study guide): each chapter includes lesson review questions and case scenarios. • Labs: each chapter has one or more labs with sample code included on a CD (in both Visual Basic and C#). • A discount voucher for 15 percent off the exam fee is included with the book. REAL WORLD I am fortunate enough to have been around when building Web applications first came into vogue. The early applications we built were nothing more than hyperlinked HTML and images. We quickly added server-side script and database connectivity to enable more meaningful scenarios. The power of having a server-based, near-zero deployment, ubiquitous, cross-platform application environment has been (and still is) the driving force that pushes us to build Web applications. There has always been, however, a major gap with respect to the richness of the user interface between a fat and a thin client. We've seen many attempts at closing this gap including Java, ActiveX, ActiveX Documents, DHTML, and others. It remains to be seen if this gap will ever really be closed. However, AJAX does provide a nice compromise between a rich client and a Web-only application. It extends what is capable on the client without breaking the paradigm of a Web application. AJAX is rooted in the Web and, like its counterparts such as HTML and DHTML, it is standard-driven, cross-platform, and ubiquitous. This makes it a great choice for adding client-interactivity to applications that must remain true to the concept of a Web site. | Special Offers
