Top Story

The Windows Hardware Logo Requirements that go into effect on June 1, 2009, have now been locked.

Please refer to LogoPoint as the primary source for viewing these requirements. For improved readability, these requirements are also available as Microsoft Word documents on the WinQual web site. Please note that these documents will NOT reflect the final locked requirements until after the monthly refresh of these documents which is scheduled for mid-January.

We would like to take this opportunity to thank all of our partners for their feedback in the past months. This feedback has improved the quality and applicability of the Windows Hardware Logo Requirements.

The Netbook and Ultra Mobile PC market continues to evolve. In early 2009, the Windows Hardware Logo team plans to revisit these form factors and identify changes (if any) to the requirements for achieving the logo for these form factors. In line with the Windows Hardware Logo team procedures, any proposed changes to these form factors will be announced in the Logo Newsletter and are subject to partner feedback.

New Driver Quality Rating (DQR) Policy Published. Existing DQR Requirements Being Retired Effective Jan 1, 2009.

Device (DEVFUND-0027) and System (SYSFUND-0040) requirements for Driver Quality Rating are being retired at this time, effective Jan 1, 2009.

Winqual will continue to show the DQR metric for drivers. Partners are encouraged to review their driver quality ratings on Winqual and address any driver issues proactively.

A new policy (POLICY-0030) for device drivers and systems has been published in LogoPoint. Per this policy, DQR will be applicable throughout the lifecycle of the logoed or signed product, not just at submission time.

The details of the logic for calculating DQR as well as the process for implementing this policy are currently under review. Partners can send in their suggestions for implementing DQR logic or process through LogoPoint Feedback for POLICY-0030. Suggestions can also be emailed to dqrpilot@microsoft.com.

Windows Start Button Logo License Agreement for Keyboard and Systems Manufacturers V1.2 Clarification Questions

Recently, there have been some questions raised about the Windows Flag Logo or Windows Vista Start Button Logo and other application icons used on keyboards under the terms of the Windows Start Button Logo License Agreement for Keyboard and Systems Manufacturers. Microsoft would like to clarify policy on this subject manner.

The Windows Start Button Logo License Agreement for Keyboard and Systems Manufacturers V1.2 clearly indicates that the Windows Flag Logo or Windows Vista Start Button Logo and other application icons licensed under that agreement may only be used for one function.

Exhibit 2 states the following:

For Products with the Application Icon:

(i) Product must meet all the applicable requirements in the keyboard and Scan Code Specifications located at http://www.microsoft.com/whdc/archive/scancode.mspx and
(ii) The Application Icon may only be used on Product keys that generate the proper scan codes to launch the Windows Operating System Application menu for the application that is in use when the key is pressed.

For Products with the Windows Flag Logo or the Windows Vista Start Button Logo:

(i) Product must meet all the applicable requirements in the keyboard and Scan Code Specifications located at http://www.microsoft.com/whdc/archive/scancode.mspx
(ii) The Windows Flag Logo or the Windows Vista Start Button Logo may only be used on Product keys that generate the proper scan codes to launch the Windows Operating System start menu, and
(iii) Licensee must comply with the requirements set forth in the document entitled, Windows Vista Hardware Start Button Specification document (which may be amended from time to time) located at (or such successor URL as Microsoft may designate from time to time). http://www.microsoft.com/whdc/winlogo/hwrequirements.mspx

If the keyboard is not distributed with a version of the Windows operating system, then the keys are required to be implemented as non-functional or removed.
